Meeting Minutes of UUFP Social Concerns Committee

Agenda Items

Retreat

Oct. 5-7. SoCo will do a Peacemaking workshop Sat 3-4:30 and Sat's dinner. Decorated cakes are being done by another group and will be available for desert. Our desert will be Apple Crisp to be done by Sandra. Our two main dishes will be Brown Rice and Beans and oven baked chicken. A side dish will be squash casserole.

PORT

- There is a request for men's sweat pants in sizes from Large to XXL.

- Pam and Donna will work on manual at retreat if time permits.

LINK

- Earth Rising's harvest celebration brought significant contributions for the LINK pantry.

- Marge wants to resume the liason role as well as promoting LINK in UUFP print publications. Pam will followup with Marge.

Welcoming Congregation

Buffy wil be reinitiating the Welcoming Congregation Committee at an Oct. 11 meeting. Pam and Steve will try to attend.

Lost Boys

Pam saw Julie Hill at a peace celebration in Norfolk. Julie is seeking suport for the Lost Boys general fund to help with numerous emergency medical issues among the Sudanese families of the Lost Boys. 60 sponsors are sponsoring 80 children in boarding school in Kenya.

CROP walk

We watched a video talking about the CROP walk. Oct. 11 at 2pm is the CROP walk. 3 folks have signed up to walk so far. Chris and Donna will man a table at the UUFP this weekend and it will be mentioned at the retreat as well.

Peacemaking

25000 for Peace is a UUA/UCC effort to take a petitions to Congress to encourage a cessation of the Iraq War. We will pass out petitions and take signatures on upcoming Sundays.

The People's Peace Delegation to Iraq would like to visit and present at the UUFP. It is an encouraging 45 minutes presentation that Pam and Jerry have seen. The will be doing a presentation in Norfolk Oct. 21st at 2pm. Jerry called Tom during the meeting and they will do their presentation at the UUFP on Nov. 4th at Noon.

Wythe Holt is interested in starting a Peninsula Peace Project. He shared experiences from a similar peace center effort in Tuscaloosa. Jerry shared experiences with a peace group that had existed on the Peninsula previously. They would like a local Peninsula Peace Project to coordination local peace efforts across denominational lines. Wed 14 Nov 7pm at the UUFP will be an organizational meeting for the group. Justice Sunday

Mason reserved Mar. 30 for Justice Sunday with Rick Glenn-Albiez

UUFP SoCo brochure

Pam and Mason will work on a brochure to promote the SoCo committee.

Pam and Jerry's Salon on Blackwater

6pm on Nov. 3 will be the next salon to be on Jeremy Scahill's Blackwater, a book on the mercenary army is an "integral" part of our Iraq War contingent. This Wed. there will be a discussion with Jeremy Scahill at the Naro in Norfolk. Also to be discussed at the salon is "Step it Up" which is a group encouraging practical efforts to reduce Global Warming.

SoCo movie night

9 attended /In This World/ Sunday evening on smuggling two lads from Afghanastan to London. Several folks expressed an interest in adding the Eleventh Hour to the movie schedule.
