Meeting Minutes of UUFP Social Concerns Committee
Attendees
Mason, Pam, Donna, Christopher, Steve Kadar, Sandra, and Jerry T
Review Minutes
Some unpolitic phrases were cleaned up. Peak oil was misspelled. Corrections have been made.
Action Item review
Lost Boys
John has headed off to Alaska. Anya and Bobbie Schilling have been enthusiastic about the cause and may be able to function as liasons. Donna reports that all of the moneys for this and next year are covered and further donations won't be required.
Fellowship Circles
Donna reports that responses have been luke warm toward
SoCo projects. Future possibilities include, further discussion with the fellowship circles and presenting ideas at the retreat.
25 attendees for Congregational Peacemaking is the highest attendance thus far. Next months is /In This World/. Holding it after the services seems more effective than doing it in the evening.
Peacemaking
One session will be hald at the retreat and the final one will be at during Adult RE in September. Next year's
SoCo Sunday peacemaking workshops may loop back and start over. Fellowship circles will also be encouraged to engage in the workshops themselves.
Salon
The Peak Oil salon held by Pam and Jerry was a success. A professor from Massachusetts presented a lot of information on peak oil. The Smithfield protest held in Williamsburg was also promoted and discussed.
The next salon will be on
Blackwater, a book which discusses recent use of mercenaries in the Iraq War. It was planned to be held on Oct. 6, but as that conflicts with the Retreat it will probably be delayed a week.
CROP
We need a bus for the "Saggin Wagon" Communications have gone out to churches. Churches have been called to confirm receipt. In the next few weeks Chris will begin looking for walkers and sponsors within the UUFP.
PORT/LINK
Dawn is our liason and will help with coordination. 15 Sept banquet will be held and Sandra may be our only attendee, but TJD and other conflicts exists for most folks.
Marj won't be coordinating with LINK for the forseeable future. Marcy has been taking stuff to LINK and Donna will see if she can take on the coordination duties as well.
Prison Books
Judy is providing the books that don't sell on Amazon, so Chris recommends folks provide books to Judy to see if they'll sell and then the rest can be sent to the prisons.
TJD
Fall Leadership Conference is Sept 14-15 on "Transformational Stewardship" to be held in Richmond. It will also be held in October in Knoxville and next year in Savannah, GA. The take will be wholistic to help individuals as well as congregations.
General Assembly
Sandra brought back CD's on a variety of topics. One great topic was on the Pentagon Papers which included serveral key figures. Next year's GA will be in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Following years will be in Salt Lake City, Minneapolis and then Charlotte.
Retreat
Oct. 5-7. Sat before dinner is the schedule for the
SoCo session on Peacemaking.
SoCo is also doing Saturday's dinner which may include some of the favorite dishes from PORT.
