Sudanese "Lost Boys" financial support
general info The costs per student are $750 for the first year and $600 for second year. July 16th is the drop-dead date for supplying money. The current goal is to cover six kids. "Peter, Peter, and John" are their names.
David DavidWalsh spoke to encourage the
SoCo to go to the board with a share the plate proposal. David feels the financial impact of the cash not coming into the church's coffers is financially practical. Nick would be a suggested expert to take the proposal to the board. As an initial effort the
Greg and Donna Donna pointed out that a signup sheet was an effective way to garner support. Greg pointed out that the cost for kids is less than $2 per day. Greg has emailed with Julie Hill and that correspondance was sent to the
SoCo mailing list.
Mason expressed appreciation at the ideas put forward. Mason wants to see that we are careful about not becoming responsible for all 40 boys on the Peninsula right off the bat.
Chris asked for the electronic and petition proposals to be combined. Jacquie recommended following a blood-drive model. Patricia is aware of two sponsors and one member of the committee is willing to commit to paying for an entire kid. David hopes all of these meetings
Mason moved "the Social Concerns committee hearing from David Walsh and Greg Sprock, recommend that the UUFP institute a policy where 50% of the non-pledge Sunday cash offering go to support 6 relatives (2 each) of the young men John, Peter, and Peter, the Lost Boys, who were here with Julie Hill on Justice Sunday, May 20, 2007.". Sandra seconded. A vote was taken and nine voted yay and one voted nay.
Concerns were expressed about the meaning of funding these lads. Cynthia expressed a concern about perpetuating a bad cycle. Greg reassured the committee that he would engage in due diligence. He would research financial transfers and long-term prospects.
Donna volunteers to man a table and a petition next Sunday. All committee members will help out with manning the table. Mason will approach Nick. David will put something in the Friday UUFP news mailing. Pam will add David Walsh to the yahoo group. Pam will receive emails regarding folks interested in supporting the Lost Boys efforts.
