Meeting Minutes of UUFP Social Concerns Committee

PORT

Follow up discussion: DonnaSprock^?: Kitchen prep from shopping, deliver of food items, delivery of prepared food, etc all went well. Had 5 individuals prepare dinner and 2 to prepare breakfast. JacquelineReam: reported donations of $578.62 with $310.34 (+ $11 instant tea donated) -leaving $206.97- which will be turned over to new PORT committee. Plenty of leftover paper products. Suggestion made that MasonMosely^? contact volunteers for feedback. Discussion regarding the youth and how to ensure their safety. Decision was to apply rule to instruct youth sponsor to instruct youth to be within site of volunteer adults at all times.- DonnaSprock^? to put together manual for new PORT committee.

GREEN SANCTUARY

DonnaSprock^? reports that she will be working with the Long Range Planning (Planning Team) to ensure that the green sanctuary program is implemented into the planning and design of the new building. She will also be working with Earth Rising for the short term implementation of the green sanctuary program.

WELCOMING CONGREGRATION

DonnaSprock^? reports that her fellowship circle will contact the Welcoming Congregation (Dan) and assist with implementing the procedures to become a Welcoming Congregation. Pam to speak with Judy Goering about the "Breaking the Ice" event at ODU.

SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE OR DISCUSSION SERIES

This event which is being headed up by ChristopherHicks was to alternate between movie and discussion.

Currently the schedule is as follows: (see SocialConcernsSundaysPlanning for most current schedule.)

* Chris to forward SWANK form to Pam. Pam to fax form and mail check for $75.00

** There was discussion regarding presenting the UU Statements of Conscience and voting on them as a congregration at the March Sunday night event. Jerry is to speak with Charlie and we will discuss further at the Feb 26 meeting.

* PamTenney to check with UUA about obtaining a copy through them. They have been promoting and may have a better deal.

PamTenney suggested for future: Power in Community, a documentary about Cuba's reaction to peak oil. A professor in Boston would be available in March (we are too busy) and again before summer. She is passionate about the subject. The UUA social justice org has been promoting David Korten's The Great Turning of Empire (speaker at last year's GA) which falls in line with this documentary.

UU SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY

Social Concerns will be providing this Sunday Morning program about Darfur. The program is pre-packaged but we need to review and assign duties. Sandra has requested to do Children's Focus.- For a preview you can go to the UUA webpage.

Sandra gave an update- to forward links to Donna- suggestion to add to Social Concerns webpage Sandra to go to Mississippi for KATRINA RELIEF. - Suggestions: donations of money, gift items with UU significance.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Patricia requested donations to help provide books and training for students ($20 each) that are being taught at the UUFP. She needed $120- Social Concerns donated $50 with rest being contributed by individuals.
