Meeting Minutes of UUFP Social Concerns Committee

Presentation from Chair

The meeting was chaired by Pam Tenney, who had drawn up an agenda including discussions of:

1. A presentation and discussion of Social Justice information from the UU General Assembly
2. A review of the minutes, including:
   1. Organizational matters
   2. PORT
   3. Possible topics and issues
   4. IRS Regulations on political activities

Review Minutes

1. There was further discussion of What Concerns UU? as a vehicle for soliciting information about social justice topics of interest to UUFP members and friends.
2. The question of a link from the UUFP web site to a social concerns web site to be developed by Cynthia and Chris was continued, and Mason said he'd speak with David Walsh about this.
3. Extended discussion of UUFP and social concerns group's involvement with the marriage amendment and the Welcoming Congregation activities that may be under way. Bryan Hess will speak about the Welcoming Congregation at the next pre-service Social Concerns discussion.
4. Minutes from the rich, well-attended pre-service discussion of An Inconvenient Truth will be posted soon. Cynthia also will post information about nuride.com, a website she researched in response to the call for information about ways to diminish CO2 emissions.
5. Some discussion of Nick's proposal to host book-discussion programs focusing on the rise of evangelical fundamentalists of all sorts.

Action Item Review

GA Social Concerns Issues

Sandra Englehardt went to GA but was not able to attend this meeting, so the discussion of GA social concerns issues was postponed.

PORT

Nan Procyson and Shirley Grice will speak to the Social Concerns group (and anyone interested in helping staff PORT) after the second service on September 17. UUFP is responsible for providing food Week 10 (January 10-17) and Week 19 (March 14-21).

NuRide.com and NoCombust.org

Cynthia will post information about nuride.com, a website she researched in response to the call for information about ways to diminish CO2 emissions.

New Business

1. There was some discussion of ways to resolve disagreements on the committee
2. For soliciting What Concerns UU? input, Donna agreed to draft a flyer to be sent around for critiquing and information. It will ultimately be sent to Cynthia for posting on the web site, and printed for the social concerns table.
3. Pam circulated the IRS regs about political activity at a nonprofit like the UUFP.
4. The meeting was adjourned sometime around 9 pm.
